BRAZIL GIVES ONE HELL OF A SHOW IN THIS YEAR’S

Diego Vasconcellos (86-91 kg), Eric Costa (60-63.5kg) and Tainara Lisbon (60-63.5kg). Three athletes - three gold medals.

This was the the perfect demonstration of the world-known Brazilian strength in the 17th edition of the South American Championship in Santiago, Chile, which was held on September 6th.

The Championship was organised by the Federação Chilena de Muaythai Tradicional and directed by its President, Sergio Liempi. But also had the support and supervision of CSMT-Confederación Sudamericana de Muaythai, chaired by Argentine Miguel Master Carpinacci.

Tainara’s coach, Sandro de Castro, represented CBMTT in this event, which brought together athletes from Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Paraguay and Venezuela.

The Brazilian team traveled with the Uruguay team, which was led by the fellow South American champion Marcos Pereira who had always been a big help to the Brazilians.

The technical level was excellent, resulting in thrilling and forceful fights. Diego Vasconcellos, a Camacho’s pupil whom previously won the South American Belt in Argentina in the 16th edition, had no difficulties winning this battle despite facing a very tough opponent. "I'm totally dedicating myself to training this year. I won the Campeoanto Gaúcho, earned the South American Muy Thai belt in my category and just last week won the Brazilian champion and therefor assured the stamp on my passport to the World Championship in Thailand. What this year’s championship in Chile did was it made me realize that I have to train more, because my goal is to win a medal in the World Championship.“ commented the South American champion, Diego Vasconcellos.

Eric from Pará was facing two very different types of opponents in the Campeonato. Not only did he have to fight the South American Champion in his category but he also had to fight the cold climate of Chile. His opponent, the Argentine Anibal Cianciaruso, is a fighter of high level and with great determination who transformed the struggle into a battle, won only by split decision in favour of the Brazilian who will obtain his title within a week.

The third athlete from Brazil was Tainara Lisboa from São Paulo, but she faced her own struggle at the weigh-in. Tainara, which was to fall into the 60kg category in order to fight the champion Argentina Romina Arana for the first South American women’s Belt, unfortunately failed to hit the 60kg despite having shed nearly four pounds but instead came in at 61.400kg and therefore had to compete for the title in the category of 63.5kg and up, which did not entitle her for he belt.

Despite her struggle and disappointment at the weigh-in, Tainara still managed to win her fight by knockout at 1.17 seconds of the first round, being a strong contender for this year’s world title in Bangkok.

Next on the schedule for the CBMTT are preparations for their Brazilian team for this year’s World Muaythai Championship in Bangkok; an event bringing together only the best of the best of athletes from 148 countries, affiliated to IFMA, which will serve as a qualifier for the first Sportaccord Martial Arts & Combat games to be held in Beijing.
