International Federation of Muaythai Amateur (IFMA) world update

International Federation of Muaythai Amateur (IFMA) world update

Amateur Muaythai continues to go from strength to strength. An important meeting was held in Brussels with all 13 Olympic and GAISF recognised martial arts in attendance to discuss the possibility of organising the first ever World Martial Art Games. All leaders agreed to stage these games, and Muaythai will be one of the disciplines featured alongside boxing, taekwondo, judo, wrestling, karate etc.

The IFMA General Secretary, Mr Fox, also attended a special meeting at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, chaired by Antony Scanlon, Head of Games Services and Co-ordination, who is also from Australia and one of the leading personalities in the planning of the Olympic games. The meeting was held to discuss the structure of these new games, the first of which will be held in 2010 and then again every four years between the Olympic Games. Many countries are already preparing their bidding for these games.

From 22nd to 27th April, an important meeting of the IOC, Summer & Winter Olympic and GAISF will be held in the host city of the next Olympic Games, Beijing, and for the first time Muaythai (under IFMA) is officially invited to take part as a fully recognised sport. This is certainly fantastic news for Muaythai, and the inclusion of Muaythai into GAISF, has certainly taken the sport to the next level. We will send you all information this week.

The IFMA World Championships will be the next massive event on the calendar, now that the European Cup, a big success, has finished - all info will be sent to you within the next three days. The World Championships will be held from 27th November to 5th December in Bangkok, Thailand, in honour of His Majesty the King’s 80th birthday, and for the first time in history 100 countries are expected to participate, showing the strength of Muaythai as a recognised international sport. Special Invitations will be sent out next week.
