ADFC ROUND 3: The Talk is Over…

ADFC ROUND 3: The Talk is Over…

The first ever ADFC Championship Belt was unveiled today during a packed pre-fight press conference at the Aloft hotel in Abu Dhabi. There were hints of both excitement and tension in the air, the talk clearly over as the fighters get primed to let their actions do the talking in the cage on Friday night. This event will be recorded in history as the one that crowned the first ever ADFC champion and the fighters were under no illusions about what this means for their legacies.

Marcos Oliveria of Brazil contests the open weight title and a AED 1,000,000 purse against the dangerous Shamil Abdurahimov of Russia in the main event. It was a case of ‘we’re gonna get it on, cause we don’t get along’ echoing the words of the great Muhammad Ali as both fighters got their final words in before they clash for their own part ADFC history – nothing personal, strictly business.

Their responses to questions from the media contingent were measured, not wanting to give anything away; when quizzed about his preparation for the fight, Shamil simply shrugged and refused to give even the smallest hint away.

Clearly nervous, Marcos showed humility and class as he praised his opponent, almost breaking down when he spoke about the tremendous home town support he will most likely receive on Friday. “I have been in Abu Dhabi for almost three years, I don’t want to let down the people of Abu Dhabi, my friends or my coaches down, to me, the championship is the most important thing” he added.

After stints in the bright lights of the NFL, Pride Fighting Championships, K-1 and even Hollywood, Bob Sapp, kept a surprisingly low profile as he prepares to step back from relative MMA obscurity. Sapp, now 36, appears determined to reclaim his legend “Beast” status by crushing dangerous opponent Stav Economou. Sapp perennial showman, played to the camera and insisted ADFC Round 3 should be re-named, Round 1, because “that’s all its gonna take for me to knock Stav out”.

Not in attendance was local hero Ali Mohamed Ahli, who will be the only Emirati fighter on the card, fans will have an opportunity to see him at the official weigh in, which is scheduled at the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai on Wednesday 9 March at 7pm.

In a surprise announcement, I SEE Entertainment and Events confirmed that Friday night will also boast the first ever female MMA fight to be staged in the MENA region. Titiana Van Polanen of Holland will face Outi Louhimo of Finland to cap off what is shaping up to be a historic event and based on ticket sales so far, it is expected to be a sell-out.

The talking is done; the fighters are ready, so let’s get it on.
