February 6: “Muaythai Day”

30.04.2011
February 6: “Muaythai Day”February 6 will become “Muaythai Day” in order to honor Prajao Seur (Lord Tiger), the Father of muaythai.

Nipit Intarasombut the Minister of Culture in Thailand was interviewed on April 21st about establishing 6th February as “Muaythai Day”.  February 6 was chosen because it was the coronation day of Prajao Seur, a former king of Krungsri Ayutthaya.  Prajao Seur was an expert in Muay Thai and was called the Father of muaythai. The Muaythai Day will honor Prajao Seur as well as help to preserve muaythai for future generations.

Nipit said, “Somdet Prajao Seur was a skillful king with marvelous muaythai skills. He made muaythai popular and also recruited men from everywhere to train in muaythai in the Royal Court. Under his guidance, several boxers became very popular during that period, including Nai Kanom Tom and Phraya Pichai (the broken sword). He became known as the Father of Muaythai and we would like to mark February 6 of each year as a day to honor him and preserve the legends of muaythai.”

Nipit also mentioned that this idea had been approved by several organizations, such as the Ministry of Sports and Ministry of Tourism. “If it is approved by every organization, I will propose this plan to the state ministers,” said Nipit.
