Stav Economou Talks About Defeating Bob Sapp

21.03.2011

Today I was fortunate enough to catch up with “The Crazy Bear” Stav Economou fresh off his win over Bob Sapp at ADFC Round 3 this past Friday. Stav spoke about a range of topics including his celebration which involved a decent meal of KFC!

62

Hi Stav, Thanks for giving me a few minutes of your time….

Q – This Friday you defeated an MMA legend in Bob Sapp inside of two minutes! Did you expect to finish the fight so early? 63

SE – When I first knew I was fighting Bob I knew that chances are this fight wasn’t going past the first round but I didn’t think I’d win in under two minutes!

Q – What tactics did you use to overcome Sapp’s size?

SE – My plan was to stand with him but try to avoid his bombs, tire him out and then try to work for the take down. 10 minutes before the fight my trainer says “don’t stand with him, get in close, roll under his punches and try and take him down.” So I being me thought that sounded like too much effort, so I just went for the take down straight away!

Q – Some write off guys like Sapp as side shows; did you respect Sapp heading into this fight? Has your respect grown?

SE – When you see someone the size of Bob Sapp up close you have to respect him.

Q – Did you go out and celebrate hard after the win?

SE – Of course! Celebrated hard with Vodka, Champagne and KFC (which was delivered to the hotel at 4am!) big thanks to Wajdouch Turki (for the alcohol) and Mohammed Noaman Al Khan (for the KFC & Cinnebuns!)

Q – What does it feel like to beat an MMA legend like Sapp? Do you see this propelling you onto bigger and better things in the future?

SE – I first found out I was fighting Bob around last September and not a day went by that I didn’t think about the fight so it was a long time coming so to finally have the fight and win was amazing.

If you see the fight or pictures from the fight you’ll see I was just in shock, I just fell to my knees because I just couldn’t believe that I had done it. Even now I still can’t believe that I’ve done it!

Q – How satisfying was it to go fly out to Abu Dhabi and get the job done seeing as the first fight was called off at such short notice due to the British weather?

SE – The whole trip was just incredible, best time of my life. ADFC is such an amazing organization to fight for so was very happy to not only get a chance to fight for them but to have such a high profile fight. It would have been nice to fight Sapp in the UK but it’s all worked out in the end.

Q – There must have been a lot of training gone into that first fight? The late cancellation must have frustrated the hell out of you?

SE – It was just the worst feeling, I was so excited about fighting for BAMMA, I trained so hard for it but alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

Q – What’s next for “The Crazy Bear”? Is there anything lined up or anyone you’d like to fight next?

SE – I’d like to fight for BAMMA as their last show looked fantastic. If not I’d be more than happy to fight for ADFC again

Q – You fought and drew with Neil Grove last May; do you fancy a rematch to decide who the better man is?

SE – I feel like I was the better man on that night but the judge’s decision didn’t show it so of course I’d like to have a rematch and I’m sure Neil would to, but the thing is that now we’re both going down such different roads (with him being signed to Bellator), that I don’t know when or where we could even fight.

Q – What was the very first thought to enter your mind when you heard about Zuffa’s purchase of Strikeforce?

SE – I was shocked but it’s still early day so we’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out

Q – Is there anyone you would like to thank or give a shout out to?

SE – just want to thank my sponsors http://thesearchforcountdante.com/
my trainer Dan Burzotta, UKMMA1.co.uk, ADFC, Padre, everyone down at Team Sure Grip for getting me ready for the fight and all my fans for supporting me, I really appreciate all of it!

Q – And finally, what are you Addicted to?

SE – Training…and KFC! Haha!
