Thai boxers win 5 out of 8 gold medals at the Amateur Muaythai Competition of Asia in IranFive Thai boxers were able to win gold medals at the ‘2011 Amateur Muaythai Competition of Asia’ in Iran recently.

The gold medal champions are Sornsiri Ratrong (51 kilograms), Narawut Pleenaromwon (57 kilograms), Saksit Sripoom (60 kilograms), Panupong Tunjud (63.5 kilograms), and Ameen Mutlee (71 kilograms). Thailand was also able to achieve bronze medals from Sarawut Nuantao (48 kilograms) and Santisook Laorluk (54 kilograms). Nikorn Poowichai was knocked out in the earlier rounds in the 67-kilogram division.

After the competition, Dr. Sakchai Thapsuwan, the president of Amateur Muaythai Association of Thailand, revealed that the result of this competition was acceptable.  “Firstly, we aimed for 4 gold medals but we were able to achieve 5 from the total of 8 medals.

We did a great job. However, we must accept the truth that Iranian boxers are developing more and more, especially Iza Aranmandra, a 67-kilogram fighter. Iza was the best fighter in the competition and this proves that not only Thai people can be best in muaythai,” said Dr. Sakchai.

Furthermore Iran also won the best team of the tournament prize while Thailand and Kazakhstan came in second and third place, respectively.  While the individual results were fairly pleasing, it is clear that some of the Thai boxers in this team still need to train hard for the upcoming “World Championship 2011” muaythai competition that will be held at Kazakhstan in September and the “World Muaythai Championship” honoring the King of Thailand in December.
