Thailand-Cambodia friendly boxing

17.05.2011
Thailand-Cambodia friendly boxingCambodian people crossed the border with Thailand to watch the friendly boxing contest between Thailand and Cambodia at the Pakkad Village border market in Pong Namron district of Chanthaburi province.

At 1pm on May 9, 2011, Poj Rakkwamsuk, the district officer of Pong Namron district in Chanthaburi, said that the district, along with Mr. Eisiwut Tungkiat, the minister of the border and tourism of the Thailand-Cambodia association, have arranged a Muaythai program between Thai and Cambodian boxers at the Thavorn border market in Pakkad Village. There were 12 Muaythai matches altogether—9 matches were Thais versus Cambodians, while the other 3 matches were all Thai.

The event was watched by both Thais and Cambodians. Many Cambodians crossed the border just to watch the boxing matches, while Thai people had come from many districts in Chanthaburi. It was a successful and entertaining event, and the crowd – both Thai and Cambodian – thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Poj said that the intention of setting up this program is to unite and strengthen the relationship between Thailand and Cambodia after the recent clashes at the Surin border. The boxers from both sides were not professionals but amateur boxers who also perform other occupations such as vegetable deliveryman, product carriers and farmers.

As for the matches between the Thais and the Cambodians, the Cambodian side won on points against the Thai boxers in two of the matches, and won by knockout against a Thai fighter in one match as a result of an accident from the Thai side when the trainer pushed the boxer too hard toward the ring, causing a muscle sprain to the Thai boxer, who was not able to continue the fight. The referee then called it a technical knockout before the fight had even started. For the other 6 matches, the Thai side used all their technique from every body part, such as fist, foot, and elbow to beat the Cambodian boxers by knockout for 5 matches and on points in the other match.

The program was also dubbed in English and Cambodian for the whole time. Moreover, the Cambodian side also asked for a new program to be arranged since they lost to the Thai side by 6-3 and they now want to retry again. The discussion about whether there would be another Thailand-Cambodia boxing event is under consideration.
