50 million Baht budget for Thai Fight film to promote Muaythai

12.07.2011
50 million Baht budget for Thai Fight film to promote MuaythaiThe Department of Intellectual Property aims to request a 50 million baht budget to make a “Thai Fight” film  in order to help promote Thailand’s unique martial art, muaythai, as well as to support the muaythai schools in China, which is considered an exciting new market for muaythai. The film is also expected to help increase Thailand’s economy and income for individuals in the muaythai industry.

Patchima Thanasanthi, the Director-general of the Department of Intellectual Property, said that the Department of Intellectual Property is prepared to propose to the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board a request for a 50 million baht budget to make a “Thai Fight” film which will be a collaborative work between Thai and Chinese filmmakers to promote muaythai as Thailand’s martial art and to raise its profile among billions of Chinese people.

“If muaythai becomes well-known in China, I believe that it will then result in many benefits for Thailand in terms of expanding its culture as well as its economy to other countries. There will be more muaythai schools and institutes, which will increase the income for Thailand. As for now, muaythai is not that well-known in China yet, and that is why we want to make this film to promote Muaythai so that it will be accepted everywhere from Europe to America to China.”

Anyhow, it is expected that Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board will call for a meeting between all committees responsible for funds to consider this proposal because, at the moment, the fund is limited to 300 million Baht only and there are already 37 projects relating mostly to filmmaking, software, music and design that have also submitted proposals totaling more than 2,522 million baht! The committees would have to consider and discuss this proposal together first to determine whether this project will definitely bring benefits to the country.

Patchima said that, the film production crew of “Thai Fight” asked for 1 million U.S. dollars or 30 million Thai baht to make this film in which the department points out that there is no fund for this field, especially when the department is in the government sector, so providing funding or a budget for private use is impossible. Therefore, it is better that the proposal is submitted to the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board to consider instead. However, it is mentioned in the policy condition that if the film generates any revenue, the Department of Intellectual Property would have to return that fund back to the provider.
