Ministry of Tourism and Sports prepare to construct Thai boxing camps in China

17.03.2011
Ministry of Tourism and Sports prepare to construct Thai boxing camps in ChinaMr. Sombat Kuruphan, the deputy governor of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, welcomed Major General Sanan Kajornprasarn, the deputy prime minister, on the occasion of General Chetsata Thanajaro, the chairman of World Muaythai Council (WMC) along with Dr. Sakdchai Thapsuwan, the chairman of the International Federation of Muaythai Amateur, inviting Gao Ziaojun, the chairman of the Chinese Wushu Association, and the group to meet the deputy prime minister at the office of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports at Rajadumnern, Bangkok.

Mr. Sombat said that prominent members of the Chinese Wushu Association along with executives from the Muaythai Association in China had been invited to see the deputy governor with the aim of signing an MOU agreement about the support for muaythai in China.

On 8 March 2011, General Chetsata Thanajaro and Dr. Sakdchai Thapsuwan took the opportunity to invite the Chinese Wushu Association from China to visit Major General Sanan Kajornprasarn to discuss improvement and support for muaythai to become more prominent in China.

As for the two sports, they have similar backgrounds, cultures, and long histories, and they are considered important martial arts for the two countries. For the past few years, the International Federation of Muaythai Amateur has tried to improve muaythai to become better known among the Chinese people because China is a big nation with a massive population of 1.3 billion people.

After receiving good support from many sectors of the sporting world as well as the Chinese government, the objective has been proposed to the Thai government to improve muaythai in China and vice versa with Wushu in Thailand because the two sports are very similar.

If the two sports gain strong and appropriate support, not long from now, there will soon be official centers for teaching muaythai in China. Those centers will provide exactly the same standards of muaythai training as in Thailand – from the basic to advanced levels in order to present the real martial art of muaythai correctly to everyone.

Mr. Sombat then concluded that he has received information that for now there are about 30 muaythai training centers or muaythai camps in China. Those sport institutions and universities were constructed by Chinese people and were not yet registered, which might cause a problem with the standard of teaching because the teaching might not be fully associated with real muaythai.

Therefore, it is very important if there are rules and real registration for those centers after they receive approval from Thailand. The Thai government is ready to fully support this issue to improve muaythai to become known by all and become prominent in China.
